Anger

Everyone needs an anger response to a degree to tell us that something is wrong.

Managing anger responses is a skill which can be learned too and there are many strategies which can be used to put us in control of anger rather than it controlling us.

Anger is a strong emotion which we are all genetically programmed to experience. It evolved aeons ago as a survival mechanism to help us stand our ground under threat. And it is still useful today: to motivate us to do something about a situation where our rights are being infringed, for example, or when we need it to defend ourselves. When it flares up inappropriately, however, it can be damaging for us and others around us. It puts tremendous strain on our bodies by increasing the risk of hypertension and heart disease and raises cholesterol levels. It also affects our immune system and makes us more prone to infections. It can put a strain on relationships with those close to us and other people we interact with.

Stress overload, often generated by the way we live these days, accounts for much of the increase in the expressions of anger in society. There is always an explanation for an anger outburst, even if it is hidden from you at the time. Once you understand it, you can learn how to change your response to whatever the trigger is. You have the power to disarm or deal with unwanted seemingly uncontrolled anger – to defuse it and to prevent resentments and annoyances from escalating. No individual is genetically predisposed to anger – we all have a genetic inheritance but at least 50% of our responses are learnt – often subconsciously. If inappropriate or unhelpful responses have become habits or tendencies then these can be unlearnt and useful responses learnt instead. These are not hard to learn – it just takes practice.
