Therapeutic Strategies
Having a toolbox of practical strategies in place can give you back control of your life and help you to withstand difficult times.
As a general principle high emotional arousal inhibits access to our logical rational brain (i.e. makes us stupid, as Daniel Goleman, the famous American psychologist said). This is the case for all manner of emotions: principally anxiety, depression and anger. We often act out of character as a result and become locked in a state of locked and narrowed attention. It follows that reducing the emotional temperature for ourselves and becoming practised at doing so, along with other coping strategies, will allow access to our higher intelligence and put us back in the driving seat.
There are many strategies which have proved very effective for many people suffering from too much anxiety, depression or anger including lack of confidence or self-esteem, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, agoraphobia, anxiety about public speaking/performance, job interviews, exams, driving tests, IBS, sleeping problems, bereavement, redundancy, financial problems, anger management, family and relationship difficulties and coping with someone close who is suffering from anxiety, depression or other problems.
I draw on a wide range of methods tailored to each client based on a solution-focused forward looking approach includinga focus on meeting emotional needs in balance, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) techniques such as thought records and teaching and rehearsing new thinking styles and including exercises promoted by the Compassionate Mind Foundation (CFT) as well as Mindfulness. The methods are practical, free of psychobabble, and are designed to give you the tools you need to put you in control of your emotions rather than the other way round.
