Anxiety and Stress

Everyone needs a certain amount of anxiety and stress in their life not least because it motivates us to get up and get going. When anxiety or stress levels are too high they can derail us.

Managing anxiety and stress levels is a skill. This is a skill which can be learned. We can then take a cold hard objective look at whether and how we can change the things which are stimulating an anxiety response or, if we can't change them, what steps we need to take to change our approach to them.

Anxiety and stress are really closely linked. Many anxiety problems arise because of stress. What stresses one individual may not stress another and vice versa. Suffering anxiety is not a sign of weakness or lack of moral fibre – it is usually a response to stress. We all need access to anxious feelings at times to keep us alert to dangers and to motivate us to take on new challenges. It’s the unproductive self-defeating anxiety that we need to tackle. The good news is that we have the resources to inoculate ourselves against adverse effects of anxiety and to take back and maintain control over our lives, effectively waterproofing ourselves against what might otherwise sometimes feel like a deluge of anxiety. Anxiety really can be managed very easily when you know how.

Thanks to the results of research over the last decade or so, we know so much more now about how the brain works and what methods best allow us to control strong emotions and cope better with difficult times. Different methods work best for different people from the principles of meeting basic emotional needs in balance, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), to CFT (compassion focused therapy), to Mindfulness, to generally accepted coping skills such as physical and mental relaxation, visualisation, mental rehearsal, physcial exercise, regular and appropriate nutrition, reframing events and learning how best to focus attention. Solution focused therapy can offer the appropriate methods, tailored as appropriate to suit you.
